Burnout: The Silent Epidemic Affecting Our Workforce

Burnout has become a significant issue in the workplace, affecting 52% of U.S. workers. Here's a closer look at how this phenomenon impacts different generations and why certain groups are more prone to burnout than others.

Here's a closer look at how generations are affected by burnout:

  • Millennials - 59%

  • Gen Z - 58%

  • Gen X - 54%

  • Baby Boomers - 31%

Why are younger generations experiencing higher levels of burnout (and if you say it's because they don't know what it's like to walk 10 miles in the snow to school, you're not helping)?

  • Work-Life Imbalance - Remote work and the gig economy have blurred the lines between personal and professional life. For Millennials and Gen Z, the pressure to always be available and connected is taking a toll on their mental health.

  • Economic Pressures - Entering the workforce during economic downturns, such as the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, has led to increased job insecurity and financial stress for these younger generations.

  • Career Expectations - Millennials and Gen Z often seek meaningful work and rapid career advancement. When these expectations aren't met, it can lead to frustration and burnout.

  • Constant Connectivity - The pervasive use of technology and social media keeps younger workers constantly connected, making it difficult to find time to recharge.

Baby Boomers, with more established careers and clearer work-life boundaries, report lower levels of burnout. Their experience and traditional work environments may contribute to a more balanced approach to work and personal life.

What steps do you think companies can take to reduce burnout among their employees?
